What are your qualifications?

In addition to the extensive education in counselling, St. Nicholas Counselling has over 2000 therapy sessions under its wings. People of all ages, cultures, languages and religions have come through its doors. The qualifications lie in the great experience gained over time in applying ideas to reality in people’s lives, and this is what makes for good therapy.

Do I need therapy?

Yes. Everybody should be in therapy at least at one point in their lives. Being in therapy does not mean that you are damaged. It means that you understand the importance of good mental health, and the benefits of having a trained mental health professional to talk to about your mental health on an ongoing basis.

What makes you different?

Our simple approach and affordable pricing. You are never left feeling confused about what has been said and how to apply the knowledge gained in sessions to your life. Also, whatever your income bracket, you are also never left feeling that the cost of quality therapy is out of your reach.

Why are you named after St. Nicholas? Does this mean you are religious?

St. Nicholas was a man who practised compassion, philanthropy and unconditional love to all in his community. He was known for being a person of great generosity and wisdom, and for working miracles to those who needed them. To this day, he is still considered a wonderworker to those who pray to him for help. It is in this spirit after which the practice is named, and not in a spirit of religiosity.

How long have you been practising?

St. Nicholas Counselling has been in operation since October of 2018. Since then over 2000 professional therapy sessions have been done under its wings. Many lessons have been learned!

What does therapy look like with you?

Ultimately, the therapy looks like it is helping you, one session at a time, with the overall mental health challenges of your life and is slowly providing you with meaning in your work and in your relationships. Therapy also looks long as in you stay in therapy with St. Nicholas Counselling for a long period of time. If the therapy is successful, you should feel that your weekly therapy session becomes an important part of your weekly routine and even a rock upon which you can depend endlessly.

Do you specialize in anything?

Yes and no. While St. Nicholas Counselling provides services that address certain mental health concerns that are special in nature (for example, Addiction, Anxiety, Depression, Bi Polar, Borderline Personality Disorder, and so on), specific training in these mental health areas have not been done. This is because focusing on these mental health diagnoses can often prevent the therapy from moving forward toward a state of non-diagnosis. Diagnoses can often feel like a trap, or even a sentence. The goal is to make the client feel normal, as if their struggles are common to everyone and can be overcome and healed with the right direction.

Can you diagnose me?

No. Mental health diagnoses are to be taken seriously. St. Nicholas Counselling is not qualified to provide mental health diagnoses to its clients. However, the therapy practice brings a knowledgeability of all important psychological diagnoses and frameworks, and so is able to work with them to help with healing and overcoming overwhelming symptoms that go with these diagnoses.
